What is LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK testimonials from real people who have had the LASIK eye surgery procedure.

The LASIK procedure for surgical correction of vision has provoked a lot of differing opinions. We hope to help individuals seeking information about the procedure so they can make an informed decision. Researching the procedure and the physician performing the procedure is important; finding out what experience others have had is also important. We hope people will share their experience, good and bad.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. The procedure permanently change the shape of the cornea (the clear covering over the eye) using an excimer laser.

Eye and vision errors

The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three primary types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Individuals with myopia, or nearsightedness, have more difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects. Individuals with hyperopia, or farsightedness, have more difficulty seeing near objects as clearly as distant objects. Astigmatism is a distortion of the image on the retina caused by irregularities in the cornea or lens of the eye. Combinations of myopia and astigmatism or hyperopia and astigmatism are common. Glasses or contact lenses are designed to compensate for the eye’s imperfections. Surgical procedures aimed at improving the focusing power of the eye are called refractive surgery. In LASIK surgery, precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue by a special laser reshapes the cornea, changing its focusing power.

Why you might want to consider having a LASIK procedure

The sole purpose of having a LASIK procedure is to improve vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you may be a candidate for the procedure.

LASIK surgery risks

Don’t let anyone tell you any different – the LASIK procedure is surgery and all surgical procedures have risks. If you are evaluated by a surgeon who assures you there are no risks to the procedure, find another surgeon. Any physician who does not openly and candidly discuss the possible risks and surgical complications is not operating with the best interests of the patient in mind. There are no surgical procedures that have no risks. Certainly, the risks are not as great as with a procedure that requires general anesthesia, hospitalization, or major organs, but there are still risks. You have a right to know what those risks and complications may be so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not you are willing to undertake the risks. The doctor has a duty to inform you so you can make an informed decision.

How has LASIK eye surgery made a positive impact on today’s society?

Question by nick: How has LASIK eye surgery made a positive impact on today’s society?
I am doing a project on LASIK eye surgery for NHD (National History Day) and need some help with some ideas about how LASIK has changed society for the better. One example I thought of was that it allows those who had less than amazing eye sight to not have to use wreck specs or contacts while participating in sports and such. = / need help asap. please.

I had Lasik this past year and it was the best thing I ever did!! My eyes were rated the second to worst out there. I had the hard German measles as a kid and it wrecked my sight. For years I wore thick glasses and could never see what was in front of me when I took them off. I was nearsighted. I went through numerous hard contacts to soft contacts. Not having good sight I never learned to swim since I couldn’t judge where I was at. After the surgery I cried for joy since I could tell my sight was clearing. It’s been fantastic. I have 20/20 in my right eye and 20/30 in my left eye. I’d become a spokesperson for Lasik if they would let me!

How old should you be to get Lasik Eye surgery done?

Question by its meee: How old should you be to get Lasik Eye surgery done?
I am 20 years old. I’ve had glasses since i was about 16 or 17. I am seriously looking into Lasik eye surgery because i hate wearing my glasses ( i am near sighted)

Recently it seems as though my eyes have gotten worse. My glasses work fine when i have them on, but i’ve been noticing that when i dont wear them, its getting harder & harder to see things i once could.

Question is, how old are you supposed to be to get this done? If i get it done now, and say a year or two down the road it starts getting worse again do they do ‘free touch ups?’

Also, if anyone knows, how does sitting in front of a computer affect your eyes? I’m a writer, so i spend plenty of time in front of the screen.

Thanks!
Also, how do i find a Lasik eye specialist near me..and how do i know they are legit & safe?

18 is the magic age so you’re fine there. you eyes will get worse with glasses as you’ll become more dependent on them as time goes on. once it’s done, it’s usually good for life. my sil had this done quite a few yrs ago. she had coke bottle glasses and now needs nothing. she uses a computer all day and has no problems. of course each person is different. find a good opthamologist in your area. he can refer you to a good center for this. we have a lrg eye clinic in our area which deals in nothing but diseases of the eye. don’t reley on the ads you here on radio and tv. i don’t trust those guys. have it vhecked to see if you’re a candidate. i can tell you, if you are to farsighted, they probably won’t do it as lasix doesn’t work on that. that’ the reason i couldn’t have it done.
good luck
