What is LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK testimonials from real people who have had the LASIK eye surgery procedure.

The LASIK procedure for surgical correction of vision has provoked a lot of differing opinions. We hope to help individuals seeking information about the procedure so they can make an informed decision. Researching the procedure and the physician performing the procedure is important; finding out what experience others have had is also important. We hope people will share their experience, good and bad.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is an acronym for Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. The procedure permanently change the shape of the cornea (the clear covering over the eye) using an excimer laser.

Eye and vision errors

The cornea is a part of the eye that helps focus light to create an image on the retina. It works in much the same way that the lens of a camera focuses light to create an image on film. The bending and focusing of light is also known as refraction. Usually the shape of the cornea and the eye are not perfect and the image on the retina is out-of-focus (blurred) or distorted. These imperfections in the focusing power of the eye are called refractive errors. There are three primary types of refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Individuals with myopia, or nearsightedness, have more difficulty seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects. Individuals with hyperopia, or farsightedness, have more difficulty seeing near objects as clearly as distant objects. Astigmatism is a distortion of the image on the retina caused by irregularities in the cornea or lens of the eye. Combinations of myopia and astigmatism or hyperopia and astigmatism are common. Glasses or contact lenses are designed to compensate for the eye's imperfections. Surgical procedures aimed at improving the focusing power of the eye are called refractive surgery. In LASIK surgery, precise and controlled removal of corneal tissue by a special laser reshapes the cornea, changing its focusing power.

Why you might want to consider having a LASIK procedure

The sole purpose of having a LASIK procedure is to improve vision. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you may be a candidate for the procedure.

LASIK surgery risks

Don't let anyone tell you any different - the LASIK procedure is surgery and all surgical procedures have risks. If you are evaluated by a surgeon who assures you there are no risks to the procedure, find another surgeon. Any physician who does not openly and candidly discuss the possible risks and surgical complications is not operating with the best interests of the patient in mind. There are no surgical procedures that have no risks. Certainly, the risks are not as great as with a procedure that requires general anesthesia, hospitalization, or major organs, but there are still risks. You have a right to know what those risks and complications may be so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not you are willing to undertake the risks. The doctor has a duty to inform you so you can make an informed decision.

how much does the lasik eye surgery cost and where do i find good doctors in alabama?

I had Lasik eye surgery done after wearing glasses for 16 years. It has been perfect for me. I have had no changes. Of course, as I age, I expect changes. I also co-manage refractive surgery and have seen hundreds of successful patients. It doesn't hurt, generally. There is a bit of pressure, but no real pain if you have LASIK. The PRK version (where no flap is cut) is a little more uncomfortable for the first few days following the procedure. I've seen several people who said they were in some pain, but healed just fine. I used to wear both glasses and contact lenses. I had LASIK done and it's the best decision I've ever made. I can see clearly, no squinting, no driving with glasses anymore. I can read road signs, see the individual leaves in the trees (they're not just a blurry mess anymore). It's also nice to be able to see what time it is when I wake up. The procedure is painless (although a bit uncomfortable) but takes less than 15 minutes. Highly recommended.

Q&A: I want to get Lasik eye surgery, my prescription has been the same for more than 7 years, even when i was preg?

Question by Meredith M: I want to get Lasik eye surgery, my prescription has been the same for more than 7 years, even when i was preg?
even when i was pregnant my prescription didn't change. My baby is now 9 months and I'm nursing and my prescription is the same as it was from over 7 years ago. They say how you cant get it while preg or nursing cuz the hormones make the vision different, but my prescription has not changed. Will they still not let me have surgery? I cannot wean for a while because we are going to travel out of the country this summer and I cannot count on the foreign water quality for formula.

Pregnancy and Postponing Lasik Surgery

Patients who are pregnant, nursing or trying to conceive should postpone laser eye surgery until vision has stabilized. If you are pregnant, it is best to wait at least two months after you have stopped breastfeeding. Women electing not to breastfeed should postpone Lasik for a few months after giving birth, allowing enough time for hormonal balance to return. Patients should also wait six months to conceive following laser eye surgery.

Another important consideration is that the drugs used to correct complications of refractive surgery may be dangerous to the pregnancy or may pass through lactation to the infant during breastfeeding. Pregnancy and nursing are contraindications for all types of elective refractive surgery.

Q&A: Can I have LASIK eye surgery to correct vision problems caused by an eye injury?

Question by Jaime C: Can I have LASIK eye surgery to correct vision problems caused by an eye injury?
When I was 12 years old I was hit in the eye by a wooden stick. It wasn't a serious injury, but I had to wear a patch for about a week. I think something was scratched?? Now my vision is about 20/70 and really washed out in that eye.
Of course I will have consultations with a doctor before the procedure so if that is your answer don't bother. I just want to know whether I'm wasting time even having a consultation. I'd like direction to a good source of information, too.
